The
following is taken from the Player’s handbook for the 1993-1994 season.
PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS TO THE LEAGUE
The
League was officially formed in May 1978, although the ground work connected with the operation and rules etc had been prepared
at unofficial meetings during the previous six months.
Clubs
who were represented at the inauguration were “Sherborne, Wellington, Railway, Hospital, Royal Naval, Basingstoke Football
and Bolton Lodge”. Five of these seven clubs entered two teams each, the Hospital and Royal Naval clubs decided not
to enter any teams. The Post Office club requested admission and entered two teams. Two clubs, Labour and Eatons had been
present at the unofficial meetings but never pursued the matter any further.
So
the first season got underway with 12 teams who played for the trophy, now given to the Post Office club, which was purchased
by donation from the founder members; no other trophies were presented. It is interesting to note that the League expenditure
was £175. I never thought when I followed up an idea floated in the Sherborne club in 1977, that in 1993 we would have three
divisions with County affiliations and entries into National competitions.
Thanks
to all the players and supporters over the last 15 years who have provided the encouragement necessary to allow our sport
of Pool to flourish. There is now a formation of which we all must be justly
proud,
helping
in our way to put Basingstoke on the map It is heartening for all the League officials past and present to see their efforts
being rewarded so generously by the support you have all given.
Keep
up the good work and may the League go on from strength to strength. I for one am very happy to have been associated with
the League’s formation.
